Home Run Derby

Home Run Derby is a peer-to-peer game played during a live baseball game. Players take turns as the Active Player, rotating with each real-life batter. The outcomes of those at-bats determine scoring, ante requirements, and pot wins.

Game Start

  • Players select an available live baseball game to play alongside.

  • A new game can be started at any time during the live game—if it’s already in progress, the next available batter will initiate the first play.

  • The player turn order is randomly assigned by the app at the start of the game.

  • Each player must submit a prediction of the total combined final score (total runs by both teams) before the Game Manager starts the game. The prediction will be inclusive of any runs already scored prior to the HRD game beginning.

Gameplay

  • One player is the Active Player for each real-life batter.

  • After each batter completes their plate appearance, the next player in the playing order becomes the Active Player.

  • The Active Player earns points or must re-ante based on what the batter does in the live game.

  • The Players who end the game with positive points are the winners. The player with the most points stands alone as the champion, claiming bragging rights in Rally Nation.

Ante Rules

  1. All players ante at the beginning of the game.

  2. All players ante again when the pot is empty.

  3. If the Active Player’s batter is out—or reaches on a fielder’s choice that results in an out—they must re-ante using the ante set by the Game Manager:

  • Single out: re-ante 1x the base ante

  • Double play: re-ante 2x the base ante

  • Triple play: re-ante 3x the base ante

  • Sacrifice plays (sac fly or sac bunt): no ante

Scoring Rules

The official live game feed determines the results of each batter’s at-bat. Any error that results in extra bases will not count in the scoring except as reaching first base.

  1. Out (strikeout, flyout, groundout, or fielder’s choice):

    • Active Player re-ante according to the number of outs generated

      1. Single out: re-ante 1x the base ante

      2. Double play: re-ante 2x the base ante

      3. Triple play: re-ante 3x the base ante

      4. Sacrifice plays (sac fly or sac bunt): no ante

  2. Reach first base (single, walk, hit by pitch, fielder’s choice with no outs made, or sacrifice):

    • Score: Equal to the base ante

    • Reached due to an error: No win and no re-ante

  3. Double (batter reaches second base):

    • Score: The lesser of 2x ante or the current pot value

  4. Triple (batter reaches third base):

    • Score: The lesser of 3x ante or the current pot value

  5. Home Run (over the fence or inside-the-park without an error):

    • Score: 100% of the pot

    • Result: Pot is awarded to the Active Player and resets

    • All players re-ante to refill the pot

  6. End of Game Score Prediction: If there are points left in the pot when the game ends, they’ll go to the player with the most accurate prediction of the final combined score.

    • Before the Game Manager starts the game, each player locks in a prediction for the total combined runs scored by both teams.

    • If the actual game has already started, players should include runs already scored in their prediction.

    • Player predictions are hidden until the Game Manager starts the game.

    • The player whose prediction is closest to the final total without going over wins.

    • If all players go over, the player(s) closest to the actual total win.

  7. If multiple players tie, the pot is split equally among them.
